Bristol is a city rich in creativity, community and movement, making it the perfect home for innovative youth dance Bristol projects. This year, RISE Youth Dance collaborated with the University of Bristol and choreographer Jess McCormack to produce something truly groundbreaking: a series of Virtual Reality Dance Films created using a 360-degree camera.
This unique partnership brought together members of RISE Youth Dance, RISE alumni, researchers and filmmakers to explore how dance, technology and place can intersect. The result? A collection of immersive “dance postcards” that celebrate personal stories, local communities and the diverse landscapes of Bristol.

What Are Dance Postcards?
The project invited RISE members from different communities across the city to select a Bristol location that held personal meaning for them. These locations became the starting points for their VR “postcards”; bite-sized dance films that respond to the atmosphere, memory and emotional landscape of each chosen place.
Working alongside RISE alumni, the dancers created movement phrases inspired by their environment. The films also include audio recordings in which dancers explain their personal connection to each location. This blend of movement and spoken word allows viewers to understand not only the choreography, but also the sense of belonging and identity held within the space.

How We Used Technology to Reimagine Youth Dance in Bristol
A 360-degree camera was used to film each postcard, transforming the viewing experience into a fully immersive encounter. Instead of watching dance from a distance, viewers feel as though they are standing inside the scene, surrounded by movement, sound and the landscape of Bristol itself.
The postcards were shot by filmmaker Aayush, whose cinematic approach brought each location to life in vivid detail. Alongside the VR films, filmmaker Sam Amos created a behind-the-scenes documentary capturing the creative process, rehearsals and reflections of the young dancers involved.
This merging of digital technology and dance offered RISE members a professional, future-facing experience, supporting skills development, confidence and artistic exploration. For anyone searching for youth dance Bristol initiatives that embrace creativity and innovation, this project is a powerful example of what community-led collaboration can achieve!

Sharing the Work: A Public VR Dance Event
On 9 January 2025, the project culminated in a public sharing at the University of Bristol’s Wickham Theatre. Visitors were invited to experience the VR postcards using virtual-reality headsets, giving them a rare chance to step inside the dancers’ worlds.
The event also included a live performance from young people currently in RISE and also our RISE alumni, who expanded on the themes of place, memory and identity explored in the VR films. Audiences, families and community members were able to watch, listen and engage directly with the creative team, building a bridge between the city’s young dancers and the wider arts community.
Celebrating Youth Dance in Bristol
This project demonstrates the power of dance to tell stories, build connections and reimagine how young people engage with their surroundings. It highlights RISE Youth Dance as a leading organisation for youth dance Bristol, nurturing young artists and creating opportunities that are innovative, inclusive and rooted in community.
